Market research formed part of my degree, so I already knew ACNielsen was a big name in the industry. But it wasn’t until I saw an ad in the paper that I learned more about them and found out how strong their client portfolio was.
I joined as a Trainee Client Executive and moved through a series of different placements, which helped me build up a detailed picture of how the business fits together. Right from the beginning I was working on technically challenging projects – I also learned about pricing strategies and got involved in a big presentation to the Beers, Wines & Spirits team.
After 18 months I was promoted to Client Manager, and at that point I noticed a big step up in responsibility. I was much more involved in day-to-day client relationships and launching new projects within ACNielsen. Three years later I moved into my current role as Senior Client Manager, joining an account team of four people. We work with people in other departments depending on what skills we need to pull in for a particular project; and because we work with ASDA, we often collaborate with colleagues across the globe.
I think it’s an extremely supportive environment for graduates to be in. The culture is fun and relaxed even though the business is full of really driven people. I’ve had a great deal of training over the last few years, initially on ACNielsen's products but also on more general skills such as presentation and project management techniques. Plus the scale and diversity of the business means there are plenty of ways to develop your career – I have a friend who joined the company as a graduate and recently moved to work with ACNielsen in Australia!
